Bhubaneswar's nickname, the Temple City, isn't marketing: the Ekamra Kshetra area alone holds dozens of temples, some active places of worship, some centuries-old architectural landmarks in their own right.
Where to start
Lingaraj Temple is the obvious anchor and the largest of the group, dedicated to Lord Shiva and still an active site of daily worship. Expect a genuine devotional atmosphere rather than a purely historical one. From there, several smaller temples are within easy walking distance.
How much time to set aside
A focused visit to two or three of the main temples takes a couple of hours; a slower, more thorough look at the wider Ekamra Kshetra area is closer to half a day. Mornings are cooler and less crowded than afternoons, particularly outside the winter months.
Practical notes
Modest dress is expected at all active temples, and non-Hindu visitors should check which specific shrines permit entry before arriving. Not all do. Footwear comes off before entering most temple courtyards, so slip-on shoes make the day easier.
Where to base yourself
The temple trail is roughly a 15-minute drive from Hotel Laughing Buddha 2 in Bomikhal, close enough for an early start without needing to stay in the more expensive, more congested area immediately around the temples themselves. See our Nearby Attractions page for distances to this and other landmarks.
